Using DaVinci Resolve’s New Sky Replacement Feature

Ever struggled with replacing a sky? Now it’s much easier.

When grading or doing VFX and you want to make a boring sky look better, it used to take time and a fair amount of effort to make it look right.

Not to mention the time to find a stock footage element to use as the new sky.

Now it’s just a built in effect that — with a little practice — can replace a sky in no time!

The release of DaVinci Resolve 18.1 included a new Sky Replacement OFX to make your life better.

In this video from Darren Mostyn, you’ll learn about:

  • Finding the Sky Replacement tool
  • Keying the sky with magic mask
  • Using an FX node
  • keying with 3D keyer
  • Feeding a mask into the Sky Replacement tool
  • Sky Mask Adjustment tools
  • Generating an artificial sky
  • Motion tracking
  • Autosizing the sky to match the shot

  1. Hi, None of my sky replacements work from my drone shots which are approx 1-2 mins long. When I track the foreground I always end up with the sky black in most parts of the screen at the end and the auto adjust just makes things worse! Most people I’ve seen demonstrating the sky replacements are carrying them out on very short videos, is that where I’m going wrong, my videos are too long? Thanks, Chris
